Summer
2004 I added two bolt on's that would help bump up the already enormous
405hp and 400tq. These included the Vortex Rammer Intake and the Kooks
1 3/4" Stainless Steel Headers with High Flow Catalytic Converters. I
took the Z06 to Speed Inc. to have the headers installed and then have it
Dyno Tuned.
To be perfectly honest, I am a
bit skeptical about Speed Inc. after my ordeal. First of all, when I
took the car in they did not give me the time of day. They told me to
bring in my headers (which included the Cats and was not so much heavy as
awkward to carry in). My mother had driven with me to take be back
after dropping the car off, so I asked for her assistance in bringing the
headers in. We were struggling to get them inside the door, when a
customer of Speed Inc. offered to help and took my mother's place. Not
a single person in the showroom offered to help. Secondly, after
receiving the car back I noticed that the steering seemed a bit loose.
This could have been because they did not tighten a bolt on the steering
shaft (which supposedly needs to be removed for the installation of the
Kooks Headers). I then noticed that the steering shaft had a wire
above it (one of my police strobe wires) with two of the wires beneath
it...in other words, one of the wires had become separated from the other
two. I brought this up to Larry, the shop manager, and he stated that
they did not need to remove the steering shaft. Hence, he was implying
that they did not do it and that it had been like that. I know for a
fact it had not - I spent numerous hours last year wiring up the police
strobes in the Z06, and if any of you know about my previous car (the
explorer with 100+ lights), you realize that I am quite experienced with
wiring and do NOT cut corners. Another interesting fact is that Larry
said they would look at the bolts and make sure "everything was tightened
back down" to see why my steering was a bit loose. However, why would
any bolts and such on the steering shaft need to be tightened if it was not
removed? Exactly; Larry was caught in a lie. He had previously
told me that when they were re-installing the shaft they might not have put
it on 100% properly or a bolt may not have been tightened fully.
However, he later stated that the shaft was not even removed (which as I
previously said, it is a necessity to do so when installing Kooks headers -
they are a pain to install I have read).
I took the Z06 back in for the Dyno Tune, and everything went without a
hitch. Thus, my overall impression is somewhat mixed. A few of
the guys up front warmed up to me and were pretty nice. Larry is very
good to work with overall; he responds promptly to any and all questions.
However, I am not sure if I would take the Z06 back there. I have very
high expectations and this experience did not meet them. |
